ESEE JG5 - First Impressions
Written by Matt
It’s no secret that I am a fan of ESEE. I am a fan of the blades, but perhaps even more, a fan of the people behind the company. They just do business the way it is supposed to be done. They offer killer blade designs, constructed from top-quality materials, at a price that doesn’t break the bank, and they stand behind their products 100%. I have modeled a lot of my business operations practices off of the standard that ESEE has set in the industry. In the past year, ESEE has expanded their knife offerings into a series that they have dubbed, Camp-Lore. The Camp Lore series has been designed for, and have been very popular amongst the survival and bush craft community.
The first three blades released for the Camp Lore Series were the CR2.5, JG3 and RB3 (click the link to see the specs for the original three), and then last summer, ESEE released the PR4, which has been a huge success for them.
The JG5, the newest edition to the ESEE to the Camp Lore series was unveiled at Blade Show 2018, and was announced as a Smokey Mountain Knife Works exclusive offering. ESEE gave official release date for the JG5 as August 31st, but Smokey Mountain knife works has already begun to ship the first preorders that were made, in fact I had the two that I ordered delivered to my doorstep this week,
The JG5 was designed by ESEE survival expert, James Gibson, modeled after the “Nessmuk” knife that was carried by mid-19thcentury adventurer, George Washington Sears, who was known for his writings and early advocacy of conservation.
ESEE Knives Camp Lore Series
To anyone that is into camping, hiking, hunting, or just general EDC, it’s no secret that ESEE makes some of the best survival and bushcraft knives on the market. The small fixed blade Izula has become a staple in thousands of EDC kits across the globe, whereas the ESEE 3, 4, 5, and 6 are the go-to for many people heading off into the woods.
ESEE has recently expanded their line of blades in a series that they are calling Camp Lore. The Camp Lore knives are simple designs, but they are rugged. The four knives in the Camp Lore series were designed by individuals who come from unique survival backgrounds, and are well respected in their fields. All of the Camp Lore knives are made from 1095 carbon steel, which is the same steel that ESEE uses in their traditional lineup. Unlike the traditional ESEE lineup, the Camp Lore knives come uncoated, which allows the user to develop a natural patina on the blade.
ESEE Camp-Lore RB3
The ESEE Camp Lore RB3 was designed by Reuben Bolieu – a writer, photographer, and martial arts trainer, that has spent the last 30 years traveling the globe in search of new adventures. Reuben is a well-respected expert in primitive survival techniques and edged weapons, and has gained a reputation for his advocacy of ultralight gear while out on adventure.
I am happy to announce that the Vita EDC, Vita XL, and Vita Travel Wallets have all received design upgrades. All three models are still handcrafted using military-grade materials, but you will notice a new level of minimalism and consistency in our products. The mil-spec Pull the Dot snap is still the premier design feature on our line of kydex wallets that separates us from the rest! Of course, all of these are covered by our lifetime warranty.
The design and functionality of our Architect Sheath has made it extremely popular over that past couple years. Literally thousands of our sheaths have been sold to all corners of the world, but there was always one big problem. We could only sell sheaths for knives that we have in stock. In a perfect world, we would be able to stock every blade ever made by every manufacturer and custom knife maker on the planet, but that's obviously not possible. We do stock a decent number of some of the most popular knives from the largest manufacturers, but we have had countless people ask us to make a custom kydex sheath for a knife that we don't have on hand.
I absolutely hated disappointing some of my most loyal customers, so I have changed our policy. Now you can mail in any knife that you want a custom kydex sheath made for. The price will vary depending on the size of the knife, what kydex color or pattern that you want, and on the extra accessories you choose for your sheath. It is also still a good idea to email us through our homepage to ask us about specific knives. The shapes of some blades may force major design modifications
It's no secret that ESEE makes one of the best all around small fixed blades for everyday carry - the Izula. The 1095 carbon steel and compact package make this rugged little knife a powerhouse, wether you are simply performing daily chores around the house, or hitting trails for some much needed time in the great outdoors. ESEE hit a homerun with this model, but The Knife Connection has found a way to improve on this killer design.
The Knife Connection has released a series of custom G10 knife scales for various blades, including most of the models in the ESEE lineup. The form and function of these custom scales are far superior to The G10 factory micarta scales from ESEE. Not only are the grip characteristics much improved with these scales, but they offer a much appreciated facelift to an otherwise plain knife! TKC offers these custom scales in such a slew of different color options, you're bound to find yourself stuck in-between 2 or 3 different schemes before you can place your order.
The Architect Sheath is Now Available for Some Knives Wearing TKC Scales!
We are now offering the Architect Sheath custom molded to fit the following knives with TKC scales:

Video Tutorial - Tips and Tricks for Breaking in, and Loosening a Pull-the-Dot Snap.
Armatus Carry Solutions uses Mil-Spec, Pull-the-Dot snaps on all products that come with soft loops (including the Vita EDC Wallet). These snaps are directional and can only be opened and closed from a certain direction. This is a safety feature that was designed to keep the snap from becoming accidentally disengaged.
Please note, that when brand new, Pull-the-Dot snaps can be very tight, and they do require a short break in period. With time, the snap will become easier to open and close, but the directional safety feature built into this snap will not lose its effectiveness, ensuring that the wallet will be as secure throughout time as the day that you bought it. (VIDEO TUTORIAL: Tips and Tricks for breaking in a Mil-Spec Pull the Dot Snap).
These snaps function directionally, and can only be snapped by hooking the bottom (top if using a Vita EDC Wallet) of the female socket on to the male attachment, and rolling the snap down into place (please see the video tutorial below). When attaching, the part of the female socket that is hooked to the male socket first is the part opposite of where the “dot” is located on the outside of the snap’s cap.

Why is the the Armatus Architect Sheath the best custom Kydex sheath on market?
Because it stands perfectly at the crossroads of form and function. Because it combines the ruggedness that you demand and the sexy minimalism that you desire. Perhaps most of all, because its modular - allowing you to adapt your sheath to fit your specific needs or mission.
Here are some of the ways that the Armatus Architect Series of sheaths can be adapted to fit your specific needs.
The Architect series of sheaths are made from one piece of lightweight, but ultra-durable .08 Kydex thermoplastic. The Architect sheaths employ the taco (fold-over) design, which, when compared to the two-piece (pancake) style sheaths, offers far superior levels of strength and durability.
The retention is set on each individual Architect sheath so that your knife will firmly snap into place and will not shake loose, giving you the level of security that is vital to any good survival or EDC sheath. The built-in thumb ramp and recessed index finger cut, allow you to draw your knife quickly and smoothly despite the firm retention of the Architect Sheath.
The standard belt attachment for all Architect sheaths is a laminated nylon soft loop featuring the excellent, mil-spec Pull-the-Dot™ snap, which allows the sheath to be adapted for OWB or IWB carry. The Architect sheath is compatible with Tek Lok™ and mini Tek Lok™, M.A.L.I.C.E.™ clips, our IWB over-hooks, or it can be adapted for neck carry.
